Watchdogs or Lapdogs?

Over 250,000 people gathered in Hyde Park in London over the weekend to protest US policy toward Iraq but here in the US, you'd be hard pressed to find any news outlet that reported it. I find myself looking to non-US news sources for any kind of news these days such as the Independent for any real world news these days. Whatever happened to the great American Press? The Watchdog of the people?
